Wanting something sucks. It sucks because the heart yearns for what it wants, no matter how much we tell it not to. No matter how bad the idea is, no matter how much we try to talk ourselves out of it, no matter how dangerous the slope is, we want what we want and there’s no changing that. If we’re strong enough, we can ignore our wants and deny them completely, but even when we say no, it doesn’t change the fact that we still want them. That’s why addicts go back to their addictions and dogs return to their vomit. It’s because no matter how much we wish we could, we can’t control what we desire.
We are always told to put our happiness in things that are constant, things that will never fail. But like it or not, there are some things that make us happy that come with risks. We weigh in our pros and cons, then take our chances. We roll the dice and play the game. But when we put our happiness in something unstable, something that can easily disappear, we’re left walking on a tightrope, counting the seconds till we plunge to our downfall.
But, how do we know what’s worth the risk. We have to decide what level of momentary happiness are we willing to receive in exchange for the sadness we will be left with later. It’s hard trying to calculate how much we’re worth and it’s even more difficult to decide what’s worthy of us letting it have a little piece of ourselves. But in the end, we decide it’s worth it. We decide to step out on that tightrope and experience the happiness, even if it might only be temporary, knowing that one day, we might be left falling back to the place where we were in the very beginning.
But sometimes something that incredible happens. Sometimes, you find something that gives you so much joy and so much happiness, that you’ll risk any amount of pain for it later: something that you love so much, something that you can’t picture a day without, something that you’ll sacrifice any amount of hardships for. You find something worth fighting for, something that is the one thing you can completely lose yourself to. You finally feel invincible knowing that whatever happens next, you have the one thing you’ve always needed. You’ve found the one thing that makes you feel infinite, definite, and complete.
And that one thing is absolutely, completely, and without a shadow of a doubt, worth walking on that tightrope for.
Find your tightrope. And leap.
